If you are in a car accident

If you have been injured in a car accident, it is important to:

• Stop. This may seem obvious, but some drivers are afraid, flustered, or feel that there were no damages or injuries. You don't want to be charged with leaving the scene. Don't move the cars unless necessary to allow traffic to pass.
• Notify police. Call 911. If there are injured people, the 911 dispatcher will call the ambulance. Don't move injured people unless they are in imminent danger.
• Give your information to the other driver. Record all the license and insurance details of the other driver. When the police come, take down the name, badge number, and jurisdiction of the officer(s).
• Get a police report. You should be able to get a copy of the police report, at the scene or the next day.
• Take pictures. If you have a camera in the car, use it. Take pictures of the accident scene and damage to the vehicles.
• Don't say anything. Except for exchanging information and making sure the other driver is not hurt, say nothing. Don't admit or accuse--it might be used against you.
• Get names of witnesses. If anyone saw the accident, get the name, address, and phone number.
• Get medical help. Even if you think you were not seriously hurt, have yourself examined as soon as possible, giving the doctor all the information you can.
• Notify your insurance company as soon as you can, while at the scene if possible.
